Northampton Dance School Wins World Gold

In a dazzling display of talent and dedication, Northampton’s very own Top Hat Dance & Theatre School has made headlines by winning gold at the prestigious Dance World Cup in Spain. Competing in the ‘mini jazz large group’ category, the school not only represented England but also brought home the top prize, marking a significant achievement for the local community.

Founded in 2009 by the accomplished Julie McKenna, Top Hat has become a beacon of creativity and confidence for young performers. Julie, who moved from Glasgow to Northampton during her teenage years, has infused her school with the vibrant spirit of the West End, where she once performed. Her passion for the arts and commitment to nurturing young talent have made Top Hat a cherished institution in Northampton.

The school offers a wide array of classes, from dancing and singing to musical theatre and acrobatics, welcoming everyone into its judgement-free environment. This inclusive approach has fostered a community where students thrive, building confidence and lifelong friendships.

Julie proudly shared, “Everyone feels happy and welcome. It’s such a happy place to work and we’re a community.” This sense of community was palpable as the mini jazz large group of 20 students triumphed against fierce international competition, earning their medals from none other than Dance Moms icon Abby Lee Miller.

The success didn’t stop there. The school’s musical theatre large group secured sixth place, and nine-year-old soloist Louie achieved impressive rankings across multiple categories. These achievements underscore the incredible talent nurtured within Northamptonshire, a county renowned for its vibrant dance community.
