Northampton’s Food Scene: A Celebration of Local Producers
In the heart of Northampton, a vibrant food and drink scene is flourishing, and it’s all thanks to the dedicated local producers who are passionate about their craft. Among them is Steve Reid, a decorated cheesemaker and the proud owner of three successful businesses that have been serving the community for over a decade.
Steve’s journey began with the establishment of Friars Farm, nestled in Foundry Street, 13 years ago. Since then, he has expanded his culinary empire with The Northampton Cheese Company and The Northampton Charcuterie Company. Each business stands on its own but they all complement one another, creating a harmonious blend of chutneys, sauces, preserves, cheeses, meats, and charcuterie.
But Steve’s entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. Last November, he launched the Artisan Collective Farm Shop in Midsummer Place, Milton Keynes, where he showcases not only his own products but also a variety from other producers across the county. His latest venture, a stall at the newly refurbished Market Square, has been met with great enthusiasm since its opening.
Steve’s favourite part of being a business owner in Northampton? “Creating all the wonderful products,” he says. He believes in the power of collaboration and the magic that happens when producers and growers come together to create exceptional products. Despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, he remains optimistic about the future of Northampton’s food and drink industry.
One thing Steve would like to see is more national promotion for the talent in Northamptonshire. He believes that the county’s products deserve to be celebrated at events across the country. “We have a lot to offer,” he insists. “There are good producers in the county and they should be celebrated.”
Steve’s proudest achievement? His growing collection of national and international awards, particularly for his cheese and charcuterie companies. But more than the accolades, it’s the community’s support and the opportunity to help other local producers that truly make his journey worthwhile.
So, next time you’re in Northampton, why not explore its thriving food and drink scene? You’ll not only discover delicious products but also the passionate people behind them. After all, as Steve says, “It’s good when producers and growers come together and band their ideas to create exceptional products.”
