Northampton’s Festive Extravaganza: A Christmas Guide

As the festive season draws near, Northampton town centre is preparing to transform into a winter wonderland, filled with twinkling lights, ice skating, and a magical Santa’s Grotto. With just weeks to go until Christmas, here’s your guide to the festive events taking place in the heart of Northampton.

The annual Christmas lights switch on is a highlight of Northampton’s festive calendar. Last year, the event took place in Becket’s Park due to construction in the Market Square. This year, the event returns to its original venue, the newly revamped Market Square. Organised by Northampton Town Council (NTC), the switch on is scheduled for Saturday, November 23, running from midday to 6pm. The lights will be turned on at 5pm, marking the official start of the festive season. Expect a stage filled with entertainment, community stalls, and festive workshops and activities. The Mayor, panto stars, and Father Christmas himself will all be there to help turn on the lights.

Following the success of last year’s event at Becket’s Park, NTC has decided to host a Winter Wonderland there on Saturday, December 7. From midday to 6pm, families can enjoy ice skating, live performances on the Christmas bandstand, children’s Christmas crafts and activities, festive workshops, fun fair rides, refreshment stalls, a bar, and more. The event will also feature a Christmas market, showcasing seasonal produce from local community groups, businesses, and organisations.

Finally, the Santa’s Grotto, hosted by BID, will be set up in Grosvenor Shopping Centre from Saturday, November 23. For just £1 per family, you can meet Father Christmas, take your own photos, and each child will receive a gift. All money raised will be donated to charity. Pre-booking on the Northampton BID website is required.
