Local Artist Illuminates Northampton’s Charm in Vibrant Exhibition
This weekend, Northampton’s Grosvenor Centre will be awash with colour and local pride, thanks to the creative prowess of homegrown artist, Sophie Slade. Known for her vibrant depictions of our beloved town, Sophie is set to host an exhibition that pays tribute to Northampton’s businesses and landmarks.
Sophie, a University of Northampton fine art graduate, has been “painting the town in colour” since she launched her collection, ‘Paint the Town in Colour’, four years ago. Her series of paintings capture Northampton in a riot of hues, with a particular emphasis on the atmospheric glow that descends after sunset.
Under her business, Sophie Slade Art, she sells these vivid representations as prints, jigsaws, and A6 cards. She also takes on commissions, often creating colourful renditions of homes, wedding venues, businesses, and even the occasional pet portrait.
This Saturday’s exhibition, held in the Grosvenor Centre, is not just a showcase of Sophie’s talent, but also a celebration of the landscapes, buildings, and businesses that make Northampton unique. In addition to viewing her artwork, visitors can also partake in a free painting activity hosted by Sophie herself.
The exhibition marks the culmination of four years of hard work and dedication. Every piece on display will be available for purchase, including paintings, prints, cards, and jigsaws.
Sophie’s journey as an artist began during her GCSE studies when she discovered her passion for art. She knew then that self-employment was her future and was determined to find a style that could provide a steady income.
“I knew I wanted to use my love of colour that I found during university,” Sophie shared with the Chronicle & Echo. “There are so many nice places in Northampton that don’t get attention and I wanted to draw on the architecture.”
Since graduating and launching her business, Sophie’s proudest achievement has been running workshops from Saints Coffee in St Giles’ Street and in peoples’ homes. This weekend, she looks forward to meeting people, discussing their favourite Northampton spots, and gathering inspiration for her future works.
Join Sophie this Saturday, and let’s celebrate the beauty of Northampton together.
