For the very first time, the picturesque county of Northamptonshire is set to take centre stage in the world of competitive cycling. The 2024 Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men’s cycling competition will be gracing the county’s roads, bringing with it a rush of excitement and anticipation.

The thrilling fifth stage of the tour is scheduled for 7 September, beginning at the University of Northampton and culminating in a heart-stopping sprint into the town centre by the iconic Guildhall. The 91-mile route will weave its way through the charming town of Daventry and nearly 30 quaint villages, offering a unique showcase of Northamptonshire’s beauty to a global audience.

Daniel Lister, cabinet member for local economy, culture and leisure at West Northamptonshire Council, expressed his excitement about the upcoming event. He believes that this prestigious competition will spotlight Northamptonshire on the international stage, drawing attention to the county’s vibrant culture and stunning landscapes.

The Tour of Britain, which was relaunched in 2004, is an annual event held across six stages in September. This year’s race will see the men’s route pass through Daventry, before looping south of the town through picturesque villages such as Abthorpe, Wappenham, and Helmdon. The cyclists will then journey through Culworth, Byfield and Hellidon, before circling around Northampton via Watford, West Haddon, Naseby, Kelmarsh and Brixworth.

Race director Rod Ellingworth anticipates an exhilarating race, as the majority of participants will be navigating unfamiliar roads. The race begins in the Scottish Borders on 3 September, with stages in the Tees Valley, South Yorkshire and East Midlands. After the West Northamptonshire stage, the race will conclude in Suffolk on 8 September.

So, mark your calendars, Northamptonshire! Get ready to cheer on the cyclists as they pedal their way through our beautiful county in this thrilling international event.
