Celebrating a Local Cricket Legend’s OBE
Devon Malcolm, the legendary former England cricketer, is planning a year-long celebration after being honoured with an OBE at Windsor Castle. Recognised for his outstanding contributions to cricket and his efforts in promoting diversity within the sport, Malcolm received his award from the Princess Royal as part of the King’s Birthday Honours.
Malcolm, who resides near Northampton, has had an illustrious career, playing at county level for Northamptonshire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire. With 128 Test wickets for England in the 1990s, his cricketing prowess is well-documented. One of his most memorable performances was in 1994, where he took an astonishing nine wickets for just 57 runs against South Africa at The Oval.
Beyond his playing days, Malcolm has remained a significant figure in cricket. As the president of Brixworth Cricket Club in Northamptonshire, he continues to inspire and nurture young talent. His work with the England and Wales Cricket Board aims to encourage more black children to engage with the sport, ensuring cricket remains inclusive and diverse.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Malcolm began his professional career with Derbyshire in 1984. His journey from the Caribbean to the pinnacle of English cricket is a testament to his dedication and passion for the game. When he first received the letter informing him of his OBE, Malcolm admitted he “couldn’t believe it” and had to read it multiple times. His friends, however, were unsurprised, assuming it was merely another accolade in his distinguished career.
