Northampton College Wins Prestigious Carpentry Award

Northampton College has carved out a name for itself by clinching the Institute of Carpenters (IOC) Duchess of Gloucester Award for the Advancement of Skills within the Timber Industry. This prestigious accolade celebrates the College’s dedicated efforts to address the UK construction industry’s shortage of skilled carpenters with a focus on heritage skills.
Mark Bradshaw, Curriculum Manager for Construction, proudly shares, “Our Carpentry Team is committed to nurturing a new generation of professionals equipped with traditional carpentry and joinery skills.” The team’s innovative approach has forged strong industry links, offering students invaluable real-world experience.
The Carpentry Team, led by Tim Chisholm, embarked on transformative projects, including the restoration of Delapré Abbey’s historic stables. This multi-million-pound project, supported by the Lottery Heritage Fund, showcases the students’ conservation carpentry skills. The restoration of Gardener’s Cottage Number 2, a 19th-century gem, has seen students sympathetically restore sash windows and undertake extensive timber repairs.
Students have also contributed to local heritage projects, including Northampton and Lamport Railway, Abington Park, and the Grade II listed Old Black Lion pub. These hands-on experiences, alongside industry professionals, enrich their learning and skill development.
