Sophie Slade’s Colourful Northampton Journey
Northampton is being transformed one brushstroke at a time, thanks to the talented artist, Sophie Slade. Graduating from the University of Northampton with a first-class degree in fine art, Sophie has dedicated herself to capturing the town’s most iconic buildings and landmarks in a burst of vibrant colours. Her collection, aptly named ‘Paint the Town in Colour,’ has been a hit since its inception.
Sophie’s journey began during her GCSE studies when she discovered a passion for art. As an introverted student, she found solace in her artwork, which later blossomed into a full-fledged career. Post-university, Sophie knew self-employment was her path, and she was determined to find a unique style that could sustain her financially. Her love for colour, discovered during her university years, became the cornerstone of her work.
Under her business, Sophie Slade Art, she sells prints, jigsaws, and A6 cards, and also takes on commissions, including homes, wedding venues, businesses, and even pet portraits. Sophie’s art is not just about aesthetics; it’s about changing perceptions. “I make Northampton look nicer than the image people have in their minds,” she says, drawing attention to the town’s beautiful architecture rather than its less appealing aspects.
Her artwork is available online and across Northampton, including in Vintage Guru and the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. Equally successful in both venues, Sophie’s proudest achievement is her ‘Art Jam’ workshops. Hosted at Saints Coffee in St Giles’ Street and in private homes, these sessions offer a relaxed environment for adults to paint and enjoy cocktails, fostering creativity without pressure.
Despite the challenges of balancing busy and quiet periods, Sophie remains optimistic about the future. She aims to continue drawing inspiration from Northampton’s buildings and expand the commissions side of her business. With her vibrant palette and dedication, Sophie Slade is truly painting Northampton in a new light.
