In the quaint village of East Haddon, Northamptonshire, a star is rising. Sophie Carter, a 17-year-old ballet enthusiast, is poised to pirouette her way onto the international stage at the esteemed Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition in London this coming September.

Sophie’s journey to this prestigious platform is a testament to her dedication and passion for dance. Inspired by her brothers and nurtured by her mother, a former ballet dancer herself, Sophie’s love for ballet was ignited at a tender age. By the age of nine, after a mesmerising performance at Northampton’s Royal and Derngate Theatre, she knew that she was destined for the professional stage.

Her journey has been one of hard work and determination. At 11, she began training at Tring Park School, a stepping stone that led her to the esteemed English National Ballet School where she currently hones her craft. While she also trains in contemporary dance, ballet remains her primary passion.

This September, Sophie will join around 60 pre-professional dancers aged between 15 to 19 from across the globe. They will work with professionals and perform in front of a judging panel that includes the renowned ballerina Dame Darcey Bussell. Sophie’s dream? To join a professional ballet company and dance on stage, regardless of where that stage might be.

As Sophie prepares to represent Northamptonshire on the international stage, her story serves as an inspiration to young, aspiring dancers in our local community. It’s a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and ‘hard graft’, as her mother Natalie puts it.

As we eagerly anticipate the Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition running from 4 to 6 September, we wish Sophie the best of luck. Break a leg, Sophie! Northamptonshire is cheering for you.
