Northampton’s Amazing Run: More Than a Half Marathon
There’s a special kind of exhilaration that comes with running a half marathon, and Northampton’s Amazing Run offers just that, with a unique twist. This year, about 1,500 runners took on the challenge of not only completing a 13.1-mile (21.1km) race but also conquering the town’s very own ‘Rocky steps’ tribute.
The Amazing Northampton Run, held last Sunday, saw record participation. The race route included a climb of 34 steps outside Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium, a nod to the iconic steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, immortalised by Sylvester Stallone in the Rocky films. Simon Hollis, from race organisers Go Beyond Challenge, described these steps as the town’s answer to the famous Philadelphia landmark.
The event, which was previously known as the Northampton Half Marathon, has been an annual fixture since 2013. The route started and ended on St Giles Street in the town centre, passing by Northampton’s three premier sports clubs. In addition to the half marathon, there was a shorter 3.3-mile (5.3km) race and a half marathon relay event.
Mr Hollis expressed his delight at the success of Sunday’s race, saying it was “just incredible”. He added, “We love the town [Northampton]. It’s an amazing place to show people and there was a great buzz.”
The half marathon traditionally started in the town before heading out to the surrounding countryside and Brackmills Industrial Estate, finishing at Delapre Abbey. However, future races are expected to include Northampton’s Market Square, which reopens this week following a £10m revamp.
So, whether you’re a seasoned runner or a newbie looking for a challenge, Northampton’s Amazing Run offers a unique experience, combining the thrill of a half marathon with the charm and beauty of Northampton
