Northampton, a town known for its rich history and vibrant community, is adding another feather to its cap. The town is honouring a local legend, Diana Russell, by naming a new cancer centre after her. This centre, set to open by the end of next year, is a testament to the spirit of Northampton and its people.

Diana Russell, a renowned racing driver from the 1960s, was a proud Northampton native. She was a member of the Phipps brewery family and a familiar figure on racing circuits during the 60s and 70s. Her love for Northampton was evident not only in her racing career but also in her philanthropic efforts. She donated nearly £2.5m towards the establishment of the new cancer centre at Northampton General Hospital.

The centre, run by the Maggie’s charity, will provide free psychological, emotional, and practical support to people with cancer and their families. It’s a fitting tribute to Diana’s generosity and pioneering spirit. Christina Attridge, the legal adviser for the Diana Russell legacy, said, “Diana was very passionate about Northampton and proud of her roots, she wanted her wealth to benefit local people.”

Designed by Stephen Marshall Architects, the centre will also feature a garden landscaped by Arne Maynard within the hospital grounds. Dame Laura Lee, the chief executive of Maggie’s, expressed her delight at the commencement of the project. She emphasised that the centre will be open to anyone who needs it, with support provided free of charge, and no appointment or referral necessary.

This new centre is more than just a healthcare facility; it’s a symbol of Northampton’s community spirit, resilience, and commitment to supporting its residents. It’s a tribute to Diana Russell, a woman who embodied these values throughout her life. As we anticipate its opening, we remember Diana’s legacy and the impact she continues to have on our beloved town.
