In the heart of Northampton, a love story for the ages unfolds as John and Joyce Verity celebrate an incredible 70 years of marriage. Their journey, a testament to enduring love, began within the familiar chime of St Matthew’s church bells, which have been a constant backdrop to their lives together.

The Veritys’ platinum anniversary was marked with joyous celebrations at the Northampton Indoor Bowls Club, surrounded by over 40 cherished friends and family members. The couple, who first crossed paths on a school bus in Kingsthorpe, have since navigated life’s highs and lows with unwavering support for one another.

Their romance, which blossomed despite a two-year separation due to John’s compulsory service, was sweetened by thoughtful gestures like the sharing of precious chocolate and sweet rations—a rarity in post-war Britain. Five years after their initial meeting, they exchanged vows at St Matthew’s Church, a moment that has been the cornerstone of their shared existence.

Joyce’s secret to a long and happy marriage? “Just say yes to everything. You have to try and compromise.” It’s a simple yet profound philosophy that has seen them through seven decades of companionship.

The couple’s shared passions, including indoor bowls and sequence dancing, have not only enriched their lives but also made them well-known figures within the local community. John, in particular, has left his mark on the indoor bowls scene, having captained numerous teams.

Now, as they enjoy their golden years from the comfort of their Kingsley home, John and Joyce reflect on a lifetime of memories, from sun-drenched holidays in Malta and Austria to tranquil retreats in Norfolk. Their story is a beacon of commitment and joy, inspiring couples across Northampton to cherish every moment and support each other, through thick and thin.
