In the heart of Northamptonshire, three extraordinary individuals have been recognised in the King’s birthday honours list, each leaving an indelible mark on their communities and beyond.

First, let’s celebrate Jenny Bott, an 87-year-old gymnastics coach from Raunds. Jenny’s journey began at 25 when she qualified in artistic gymnastics in 1962. Back then, rhythmic gymnastics was virtually unheard of in the UK. Undeterred, Jenny pioneered the sport, introducing it to Great Britain in 1973. Her efforts culminated in a national squad that competed in the 1975 World Championships. Jenny’s legacy includes a centre of excellence in Bedford and a rhythmic gymnastics club in Northampton, which she ran for 40 years. Her dedication earned her an MBE, a testament to her lifelong commitment to the sport.

Another local champion, Anita Neil from Wellingborough, also received an MBE. Anita made history as Britain’s first black female Olympian, competing in the 1968 and 1972 games. Despite feeling overlooked for years, her pioneering achievements were finally acknowledged by the sport’s governing body in 2021. Anita’s joy at receiving the honour is palpable, as she exclaimed, “I feel ecstatic, it’s so marvellous to be recognised.”

Lastly, Sheralee Webb from Denton, east of Northampton, was honoured for her dedication to special needs education. As the head teacher of Northgate School, Sheralee created The Bee Hive, a unique sixth form providing real job experience for pupils. Her innovative approach faced resistance, but Sheralee’s determination prevailed. Her MBE recognises her unwavering commitment to preparing children for life beyond school.

These inspiring stories of Jenny, Anita, and Sheralee remind us of the incredible impact that dedicated individuals can have on their communities. Their honours are not just personal achievements but a celebration of Northamptonshire’s rich tapestry of talent and perseverance.
