Exciting news for sports enthusiasts in Kettering, Northamptonshire! The long-neglected artificial sports pitch on Thurston Drive, which has been dormant since 2019 due to safety concerns, is set to undergo a major transformation. A generous £1m investment has been secured for the renovation of this once vibrant community hub.

The Football Foundation has stepped up to the plate, awarding an impressive £810,330 grant to breathe new life into the facility. This substantial contribution is further bolstered by a £150,000 injection from the West Northamptonshire Council and an additional £50,000 from the Northamptonshire Football Association.

Helen Howell, from the Conservative-controlled council, expressed “real excitement and anticipation” about the project. And who wouldn’t? This is a fantastic opportunity to revive a valuable community asset, and it’s clear that the local community shares in this enthusiasm.

The project is among 30 others that have received backing from the Lionesses Futures Fund, a £30m fund established by the Premier League, Football Association and the government’s Football Foundation. This fund was created in recognition of England’s victory at Euro 2022 and their appearance in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final.

Since its closure in 2019, the pitch has unfortunately been a magnet for anti-social behaviour and vandalism. However, this renovation project promises to turn the tide. The pitch will be redeveloped with a state-of-the-art “3G surface”, improved lighting and spectator areas. The pavilion will also undergo a facelift, with upgraded changing facilities and a new cafe.

This is a thrilling chapter for Kettering’s sports scene. The revival of the Thurston Drive pitch is a testament to the power of community spirit and the love of the beautiful game. It’s time to dust off those football boots, Kettering – your pitch is coming back to life!
