In the heart of Kettering, a group of passionate board game enthusiasts have turned their love for games into a thriving Community Interest Company (CIC), bringing joy and education to the local community. Founded in 2019 by Dez Dell and Gavin Price, Boards of Kettering began as a humble venture selling modern board games at That Pink Shop on Kettering High Street. Fast forward to 2024, and this dynamic duo, along with Polly Shackleton, Doug Mayer, and Gary Keller, have transformed their hobby into a not-for-profit CIC, using board games as a tool to teach essential skills and promote well-being.

Polly Shackleton, the programme director, brings her expertise from a local therapeutic school to the initiative. With national accreditation, Boards of Kettering CIC is now part of the Skills Builder Partnership, applying a recognised framework to support skill development through play. Polly’s innovative approach has been well-received by young learners, and she is currently designing programmes for local schools and the home-education community.

Gavin Price, a self-confessed board game aficionado, volunteers at Youth Works Northamptonshire’s ‘Throne of Games’ club, sharing his vast collection of over 350 games with 11-18-year-olds. For Gavin, board games are more than just a pastime; they are a means to build friendships and create lasting memories.

The CIC has garnered support from Autistic Children Enabled and a grant from Mid Counties Co-operative Society. They are also part of the North Northants Social Enterprise Network, connecting with other community-driven initiatives.

Boards of Kettering continues to expand, stocking games in Northampton’s Vintage Guru and Kitsch Mitch at The Yards. Their board game cafĂ© nights are a hit, and the Northants Board Game Convention will return in 2025, promising more fun and learning for all. At James Anthony, we love seeing local initiatives like this thrive, bringing communities together in delightful ways.
